OBSESSION: Crochet

Growing up in harshly cold, gray Ruda Slaska, ­Poland, Agata Oleksiak (now known solely as Olek) took creative refuge in colorful crafts, making bright Barbie clothes and the occasional crocheted hat. ­But it wasn’t until 2002, after moving to Greenpoint and teaching herself English by watching subtitled movies, that she picked up a crochet hook at the dollar store and her former hobby erupted into an obsession. Now an established artist—she’ll show at the Smithsonian in 2012—the 33-year-old Olek covers everything from mundane household objects to public sculptures to people in her loopy yarn confections. See someone riding the subway in a head-to-toe crocheted bodysuit? Chances are, he’s Olek’s latest canvas. Her largest installation to date is a fifteen-by-fourteen-foot studio apartment, wherein ­every wall, picture frame, television, and toilet is wrapped in its own custom sweater. Originally stitched in Olek’s own Park Slope apartment, the crocheted mini-universe is currently ­exhibiting at ­Christopher Henry Gallery in Nolita, where it will remain until May 28. The gallery’s assistant director, ­Jason LeBlond, confirms what you might have speculated about Olek, who is rarely spotted not wearing a crocheted cardigan or collar: “There is no separation between her art and her life.”

Ask, and ye shall recieve!

When poised with the question, "can you make this" I normally can work that challenge. Stethoscope in hand I marched home, gathered the yarn and began. Purple is Angie's favorite color and Flower popped in my head. So, Flower she got!

I am taking orders for the Stethoscope sleeves. I have ideas for animals too.

My Helpers

If you have ever received a gift from me or sat close to me while I was working on a crochet project, then you have seen the added dog hairs in my work. They are everywhere. No matter how hard I try to keep my projects free from hair, they still have it. So, in all due justice, I thought I would post this picture. Mr Buddy is using my yarn as a pillow. The puppy has even taken a few skeins for a whirl around the living room a time or two. My little Fur Helpers. I love them.

KU Rellik

This is a DANA ORIGINAL. I did not have a pattern for this hat, thus I totally winged it once again. As you will come to know, I don't create patterns and I don't typically use other's patterns. I just create. This hat is made with Red Heart Yarn. I normally do not prefer Red Heart, but they had the KU colors and it does not tend to loose the shape and is colorfast after several washings. It also tends to keep the Peanut (head) rather warm on the cold Kansas days.

Rellik is my little dog that I just LOVE & ADORE! He is the model for my KU Ear Muff Hat.

BLT Scarf

Introducing.....

MY B.L.T. Scarf!

This is a Dana Original. I did not have a pattern for this, I just saw it in my mind and away the crochet hook went. I have at least 24-hours in this scarf. Most of the project is made from Red Heart yarn, Vanna's Choice and some misc. balls of yarn I bought at Fabric Recycles (a new, Great store that opened in Overland Park).

I don't write patterns because I don't read them all to well. My lingo is totally different...just ask my friend Tamara. I guess my crochet is kinda like everything else. The "thingy, goes with the thing-a-ma-jig, and so forth. Tee hee hee.

Summer Bucket List

This is not my work. I am cyber stalking the Flicker Crochet Pool today. I am just in a mood and this photo stream makes me feel happy. I must admit that this summer I am going to start a rainbow blanket. I am in love with all of the wonderful colors. So, my bucket summer list is:

1. Finish the Red Wine Blanket
2. Start a Rainbow blanket
3. Finish the Orange muck blanket for Donna

My Crochet History

(Annie's Attic Pattern) I would be dangerous if I had a little girl right now...I have come so far in my crochet abilities since Chelsie has been born.

I learned how to crochet about 15 years ago and started with one huge granny square blanket for my first project. My mother in law, Mary, finally taught me the patience to sit still and go for it.

Once upon a time, I only knew about granny squares, "H" hooks, and acrylic yarns. And reading patterns was out the window. Now I own at least 3 of each size hooks, I make up designs on my own, and I fart around with patterns. I can read basic stuff, but learning more and more each day thanks to my good friend Tamara the Crochet Queen.

Happy Birthday to my Mother in Law, Mary, tomorrow.
